It’s not often that I ask this but what does National Rooster Day even mean? Why would roosters get a whole day?
I asked these questions after a very thorough 5 minute internet search looking for the origin of this day and finding nothing. Bet said “Because every animal gets a day? Just like every rose has a thorn? And everyone sings a sad sad song…?” She was doing pull ups at the time so I think the blood had left her brain but she had a point. Why wouldn’t roosters get a day?
And besides, who are we kidding. We’ll celebrate anything.
So today we made a rooster drink. Or rather, we made a drink in their honor.
The Rooster (known in less imaginative circles as a spicy michelada)
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon Sriracha sauce
dash of salt
Mix all this together and pour over ice in a beer glass. I don’t like salt on the rim of my drinks but Bet does; so, if you want salt, pour it all out into another glass, mix together salt and chili powder, rub the rim of the glass with a lime then rotate the glass around in the salt mixture until the rim is covered. THEN pour everything back in, (it’s well mixed now) and fill the rest of the glass with 12oz of the beer of your choice. If you really want to keep in the theme, use a beer from the Rooster Brewing Company in Ogden Utah.
Then sit out on your patio in the middle of the afternoon and bask in the sunlight with a magazine. We thought this sun a mythical creature but lo and behold, it came out today in honor of the roosters.
The Rooster is spicy and sour and delicious. Even a rooster would love it. I know because I asked him.
He said he’s all for it.
I’d like to close with a short poem written by my 6 year old niece and reprinted here with permission:
The Rooster
I had a rooster
And it squawked
All day
I could not stand it.
If you would like a transcript of that poem in the original spelling, just ask.
Happy National Rooster Day!
